Low writing levels back in the news

Low writing levels in schools are back in the news, this time because research finds schools are dropping a focus on writing too early. “Writing performance among students plateaued between Years 3 and 5, before declining in Years 7 to 9”

The job English and Humanities teachers do is multi-faceted and time consuming. Teachers need to manage effective strategies that extend advanced writers, scaffold instruction for low performance writers and often build ESL base skills. They do this whilst maintaining a standards and curriculum aligned track for everyone including content delivery. A Meerkat would say, “Simples”! Teachers say, “near impossible”.

How do teachers cope with this variable workload without respite from the hours of grading and feedback? There is a lot technology can do to save teacher time and collect better data, especially for building writing skills.
